WIP Week 21: Comar Creatief Kitties|Poesjes

A quick update, because I do not have much to share. I am very busy wrapping up my bachelor degree studies and thesis, so there is not much time for stitching. In fact, I had to put away Box of Delights, because it was too distracting. I am back to easy stitching and for now that means the kitties of Comar Creatief. I'm working on the third one, but I have not even managed to finish that.

Last weekend I did get a couple of hours of stitching in, but that was on the secret project, so I can't show photos.

Een korte update, omdat ik niet veel te delen heb. Ik ben druk met het afronden van mijn bacheloropleiding en scriptie, dus er is niet veel tijd voor borduren. Sterker nog, ik heb Box of Delights opgeruimd, want het was een te grote afleiding. Ik ben weer bezig met simpel borduurwerk en voor nu betekent dat de poesjes van Comar Creatief. Ik ben bezig met de derde, maar zelfs die heb ik niet kunnen af maken.

Afgelopen weekend heb ik een paar uur kunnen borduren, maar dat was aan het geheime project, dus ik kan geen foto's laten zien.

WIP Week 20: Blackwork Journey - Box of Delights

I was determined to finish the outlines for Box of Delights this week, so my weekly update is a little later. I'll try to catch up soon.

The majority of my stitching time is dedicated to the project for Borduurblad, so there is not much to show you. I did finish the second cat of the designs by Comar Creatief:

Ik was vastbesloten om de randen voor Box of Delights af te maken deze week, dus mijn wekelijkse update is een beetje later. Ik hoop gauw de achterstand weer in te halen.

Het meerendeel van mijn borduurtijd wordt besteed aan het project voor Borduurblad, dus ik kan helaas niet veel laten zien. Het is me wel gelukt om de tweede kat van de ontwerpen van Comar Creatief af te maken:

WIP Week 19: Blackwork Journey - Box of Delights

Time for another weekly update. First there is a finish. Paddington, RC-7014 by Royal Crown is finished! You can read all about it in my previous post.

I have stitched myself a bit closer to the centre of the Blackwork SAL by Blackwork Journey.

The fox on Eva Rosenstand's bell pull The Hunt II is close to getting its eyes and nose stitched.

And the kitty of Comar Creatief's designs has some fur, but is not really stitched on at all:

The reason for the lack of progress on my WIPs is the exciting news I was talking about last month. Now I can finally share it with you: I am one of the new model stitchers for the Dutch embroidery magazine Borduurblad. Although I am very excited about it - and am enjoying the projects very much - there is not much I can show you about their progress. They are to remain secret until publication, so we need to be patient.
I put in quite a few thousand stitches on one of these projects. It has a tight deadline, so I have had to put away Eva Rosenstand's The Hunt II. Nevertheless I want to keep showing some progress each week, so I will keep on stitching on Box of Delights and the cats.

Tijd voor weer een wekelijkse update. Allereerst is er een finish. Paddington, RC-7014 door Royal Crown is af! Je kunt meer lezen in mijn vorige post.

Ik heb mezelf een stukje dichter naar het centrum van de Blackwork SAL van Blackwork Journey geborduurd.

De vos van Eva Rosenstand's schellekoord De Jacht II is bijna zover dat het ogen en een neus krijgt.

En het poesje van Comar Creatiefs ontwerpen heeft een beetje vacht, maar er is eigenlijk niet aan geborduurd:

De reden voor mijn gebrek aan vooruitgang aan mijn WIPs is het spannende nieuwes waar ik het vorige maand over had. Nu kan ik het eindelijk met jullie delen: ik ben een van de nieuwe modelborduursters van Borduurblad. Hoewel ik hier heel erg blij mee ben - en met veel plezier aan de projecten werk - kan ik je niet veel laten zien van hun vooruitgang. Ze moeten geheim blijven tot publicatie, dus we moeten geduldig zijn.
Ik heb een paar duizend steekjes geborduurd op een van deze projecten. Het heeft een strakke deadline, dus ik heb Eva Rosenstands De Jacht II op moeten bergen. Niettemin wil ik elke week een beetje vooruitgang laten zien, dus ik blijf borduren aan Box of Delights en de katten.

A while ago I rediscovered my cross stitch stash from my teenage years and younger. This was one of the first kits I ever started stitching. I had not gotten very far: only about 50 stitches in. It seemed like a fun idea to finish it, though I did take the old stitches out first.

It's a simple design. The cross stitches do not provide much detail or finesse and when they were done, the design looked rather terrible. The details are all in the back stitches and boy, does this design have some back stitches! Too much, in my opinion. And to make matters worse: they often went over a quarter of a stitch on aida cloth stitched over with two threads.
You would think that the design theme and the simple choice of colours and so would make for a beginner's kit, or at least one for children, but it's small wonder I did not finish it when I was younger. I really had to force myself to finish the back stitches - especially the black on black ones - although I must admit that the end result is beautiful.

The chart was quite alright. There was a missing symbol inside the bear and I thought that bold lines over 10x10 squares were a bit large for a chart that is just 74x74 - over five would have been nicer. Nevertheless the chart was clear, even with all the back stitches.

The fabric was fine. A standard white-ish aida. The threads were DMC, so nothing wrong with that either. There was plenty of thread, even after frogging the old stitches. So brownie points for that.

Although the end result is beautiful, I can't really bring myself to being enthusiastic about this design. Which is one of the reasons it took me so long to write this review. I feel like the design is lazy: a line drawing filled in with simple colours. It was not adjusted to being a cross stitch chart. Some of the back stitched lines could have been made to fit the aida fabric better and a higher number of cross stitches would have not made the design look so lazy. As you can see on the photo, the back stitches surround empty areas or cut across large parts of cross stitches.

So if you love back stitching and/or Paddington: go for it! And if you don't: there are plenty of charts out there - go find another.

Een tijdje terug herontdekte ik mijn borduurvoorraad uit mijn tienerjaren en jonger. Dit was een van de eerste pakketten die ik ooit ben begonnen. Ik was niet erg ver gekomen: slechts ongeveer 50 steekjes. Het leek me een leuk idee om het af te maken, hoewel ik eerst de oude steekjes heb uitgehaald.

Het is een simpel ontwerp. De kruissteekjes geven niet veel detail of finesse en wanneer ze af zijn, ziet het ontwerp er eigenlijk best wel slecht uit. De details zaten allemaal in de stiksteekjes en sjonge, dit ontwerp had veel stiksteekjes! Te veel, naar mijn mening. En om het nog erger te maken: ze gingen vaak over een kwart van een steek op aïdastof dat geborduurd was met twee draadje.
Je zou denken dat het thema van het ontwerp en de simple kleurenkeuze een goed beginnerspakketje zouden maken, of in ieder geval een voor kinderen, maar het is geen wonder dat ik het niet af heb gemaakt toen ik jong was. Ik heb mezelf echt moeten dwingen om de stiksteekjes af te maken - helemaal de zwart op zwarte - hoewel ik moet toegeven dat het eindresultaat erg mooi is.

Het patroon was vrij okay. Er miste een symbool in de beer en ik vond dat de dikke lijnen over 10x10 vierkanten een beetje te groot waren voor een patroon dat maar 74x74 is - over vijf zou beter zijn geweest. Niettemin was het patroon duidelijk, zelfs met alle stiksteekjes.

De stof was prima. Een standaard wit-achtige aïda. Het garen was DMC, dus daar was niets mis mee. Er was meer dan voldoende garen, zelfs toen ik de oude steekjes had uitgehaald. Wat dat betreft pluspunten.

Hoewel het eindresultaat erg mooi is, kan ik mezelf er niet toe zetten om veel enthousiasme op te brengen voor dit ontwerp. Wat ook een van de redenen is dat het zo lang heeft geduurd voordat ik deze recensie heb geschreven. Het voelt voor mij alsof het ontwerp lui is: een lijntekening gevuld met simpele kleuren. Het is niet aangepast als borduurpatroon. Sommige van de gestiksteekte lijnen konden beter worden gepast op de aidastof en een grotere hoeveelheid kruissteekjes zou het ontwerp niet zo lui hebben doen lijken. Zoals je op de foto ziet, omringen de stiksteken lege stukken of snijden ze over grote delen van de kruissteken heen.

Dus als je van stiksteken en/of Paddington houdt: ga ervoor! En als je dat niet doet: er zijn heel veel patronen beschikbaar - zoek maar een andere.

WIP Week 18: Blackwork Journey - Box of Delights

After doing as much as I could for my thesis' first deadline, I thought I deserved a stitching day. I spend it entirely on Box of Delights. I'm far from being caught up, but I'm getting there!

As you can see the outlines are done, as well as the outlines of the outer chocolates are all done. I have even managed to start with the little ornaments in between. It was a good stitching day!

Throughout the week I've been working on Paddington too. The cross stitches are nearly done and the top half of the backstitches are in.

It will probably be finished somewhere next week.

There is a third design to show you this week. I started it because the backstitching on Paddington is terrible: quarterstitches on the aida fabric that came with the kit. It's killing me and my eyes.

Anyway, the third design is a really quick stitch. I've worked on it for only a couple of days and would have probably been able to finish it in one, if it weren't for my busy study schedule at the moment. It's the second kitty of a set of four cats.

My last design to show you is one stitched with silks. It's Eva Rosenstand's bell pull The Hunt II. It's an old kit, but the quality of the floss is absolutely amazing. Without a doubt the best I've stitched with so far. I had to replace the linen, because it was too far gone and I did not want a similar situation like I had with Thea Gouverneur's Winter.

And last but not least, I received a wonderful gift from the mysterious Bluebell Fairy:

She is the Lady of Shalott by John William Waterhouse. My favourite painting by my favourite painter, inspired by my favourite poem of one of my favourite poets, Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Saying I am very happy is an understatement. :D

Nadat ik zoveel mogelijk gedaan had voor mijn scriptie's eerste deadline, vond ik dat ik een borduurdag verdiende. Ik heb het volledig besteed aan Box of Delights. Ik ben nog niet bij, maar ik kom steeds dichterbij!
Het derde deel van de zesdelige SAL is nu vrijgegeven (de eerste drie chocolaatjes op de derde en vierde rij). Je kunt nog steeds meedoen als je wilt. Dan moet je hier klikken om de pdfs te downloaden.

Zoals je kunt zien zijn de randjes overal af, evenals de randjes van de buitenste chocolaatjes. Het is me zelfs gelukt om te beginnen met de kleine ornamenten tussen de chocolaatjes. Het was een goede borduurdag!

Doordeweeks heb ik ook aan Paddington gewerkt. De kruissteekjes zijn bijna klaar en de bovenste helft van de stiksteekjes zitten erin.

Hij zal waarschijnlijk ergens volgende week af zijn.

Er is een derde ontwerp dat ik je kan laten zien deze week. Ik ben ermee begonnen, omdat de stiksteekjes op Paddington verschrikkelijk zijn: kwartsteekjes op de aïdastof die bij dit pakketje hoorde. Het is niet zo goed voor mijn ogen.

Hoe dan ook, het derde ontwerp is een heel snel projectje. Ik heb er maar een paar dagen aan gewerkt en zou het waarschijnlijk in een dag hebben kunnen af maken, als mijn drukke studieschema het had toegelaten. Het is de tweede poes in een serie van vier katten.

Het laatste ontwerp dat ik je wil laten zien is geborduurd met zijde. Het is Eva Rosenstand's schellekoord De Jacht II. Het is een oud pakket, maar de kwaliteit van het garen is ongelooflijk. Zonder twijfel het beste waarmee ik ooit heb geborduurd. Ik heb het linnen moeten vervangen, want dat was te ver heen en ik wilde niet een soortgelijke situatie zoals ik had met Thea Gouverneur's Winter.
