Count | Draadjes/bosjes per cm

Count is related to the fineness of fabric per inch. The higher the count, the smaller your stitches (and finished design) will be. When you have to buy fabric for your charts (as opposed to buying a full kit), it is very important to understand what count means and how it affects the size of your stitches.

There are two different ways to 'count' the fineness of your fabric: aida and evenweave.

Aida is a fabric where every fifth thread is removed from the weave, resulting in the typical squares by which you can easily identify it. Counting the fineness of aida works per square. Or more accurate: per bundle of threads of 4.
So aida 10 count means there will be 10 bundles of 4 threads in an inch. That means 10 cross stitches in an inch.
Common sizes are: 7, 10, 11, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 and 22 count.

Evenweave is (often) a coarser woven fabric compared to aida. The most popular evenweave fabric is linen. It consists of a regular pattern of threads in horizontal and vertical direction. Counting the fineness of evenweave is done by counting the threads per inch, rather than bundles of threads (like with aida).

When you stitch on evenweave fabric, you can choose to stitch over one thread or over two threads. Most popular suppliers of cross stitch kits give directions to stitch over two threads. This means that 28 count evenweave gives you 14 crosses per inch. When stitching over two threads 28 count evenweave = 14 count aida.

Common sizes are: 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 25, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 35, 36, and 40 count.

Now you can count the amount of squares on your chart to calculate how much fabric you need. Be sure to add an additional ~10 centimeters on all sides (so 20 centimeters extra length and width). It will allow you to frame your finished work or create something else from it.

Count (= tel) is gerelateerd aan de fijnte van borduurstof per inch. Hoe hoger de count, hoe kleiner je steken (en de volledige afbeelding) zullen zijn. Als je zelf borduurstof moet kopen voor je patronen (in plaats van een volledig pakket te kopen), dan is het heel belangrijk om te begrijpen wat count betekent en wat voor effect het heeft op de grootte van je steken.

Er zijn twee verschillende manieren om de fijnte van je borduurstof te tellen: aïda en evenweave.

Aïda is een stof waarbij elke vijfde draad is verwijderd van het weefsel, wat resulteert in de typische vierkantjes waaran je de stof zo gemakkelijk kunt herkennen. Het tellen van de fijnte van aïda gebeurt per vierkantje. Of liever: per bosje van 4 draadjes.
Dat betekent bij aïda 10 count dat er 10 bundels van vier draadjes in een inch zitten. Dit betekent 10 kruissteken per inch.
Veelgebruikte maten zijn: 7, 10, 11, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 en 22 count.

Nu is een inch voor niet-Amerikanen niet erg handig om mee te rekenen, dus daarom zijn er ook steeds meer verkopers die Nederlandse maten hanteren: bosjes per centimeter.

Een inch is 2,54 centimeter. Om de bosjes per centimeter te weten, deel je de count door 2,54:
7 count = 2,75 bosjes per cm
10 count = 3,9 bosjes per cm

11 count = 4,3 bosje per cm

12 count = 4,7 bosjes per cm

14 count = 5,5 bosjes per cm

16 count = 6,3 bosjes per cm

18 count = 7,1 bosjes per cm
20 count = 7,9 bosjes per cm

22 count = 8,7 bosjes per cm

De bosjes per cm zijn gelijk aan de kruissteken per cm, dus 5,5 bosjes per cm betekent dat je 5,5 kruisjes per cm hebt.

Evenweave is een (meestal) grover gewoven dan aïda. De meest populaire evenweave-stof is linnen. Het bestaat uit een regelmatig patroon van draden in horizontale en verticale richting. Het tellen van de fijnte van evenweave wordt gedaan door de draden per inch te tellen, in plaats van de bosjes (zoals bij aïda).

Als je borduurt op evenweave-stof, kun je kiezen over één draad of over twee draden te borduren. De meest borduurpakketten van populaire merken geven instructies om over twee draden te borduren. Dit betekent dat 28 count evenweave-stof 14 kruisjes per inch geeft. Wanneer je over twee draden borduurt, geldt 28 count evenweave = 14 count aïda.

Veelgebruikte maten zijn: 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 25, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 35, 36 en 40 count.

De Nederlandse maat is draden per centimeter. Dit kun je berekenen door de count te delen door 2,54:
14 count = 5,5 draden per cm

16 count = 6,3 draden per cm

18 count = 7,1 draden per cm

20 count = 7,9 draden per cm

22 count = 8,7 draden per cm

24 count = 9,4 draden per cm

25 count = 9,8 draden per cm (vaak verkocht als 10 draden per cm)

26 count = 10,3 draden per cm

28 count = 11 draden per cm

30 count = 11,8 draden per cm

32 count = 12,6 draden per cm

34 count = 13,4 draden per cm
35 count = 13,8 draden per cm (vaak verkocht als 14 draden per cm)

36 count = 14,2 draden per cm

40 count = 15,7 draden per cm

Nu kun je het aantal hokjes op je patroon tellen om te berekenen hoeveel stof je nodig hebt. Zorg er wel voor dat je er een extra ~10 centimeter aan alle kanten bij optelt (dus 20 centimeter extra lengte en breedte). Het zorgt ervoor dat je je afgemaakte borduurwerk kan inlijsten of er iets anders van kunt maken.
